How is this different from what a school traditionally offers?
A comprehensive literacy assessment must be done one on one. It needs to be completed in an environment free of distractions for the learner being assessed. The assessment must also be completed by someone with a lot of knowledge and practice with regard to reading instruction. The amount of time and professional learning in order to learn how to design a customized assessment path based on the student’s needs is substantial, and requires personal investment on behalf of the assessor. Additionally, the time dedicated to administering, scoring, and analyzing the assessment results is significant. For this reason, an assessment like this that pulls from multiple research based assessments and tools is outside the practice of many average educators in American schools today. It’s an impractical thing to administer to the hundreds of students in each school. It’s not even practical for every general education teacher to administer to their 20-30 students. Furthermore, it’s not something that every student requires… so it’s something that a majority of educators do not have practice administering.
A single, evidence based assessment to look into every strand of a child’s reading rope does not exist. An educator must pull from their professional experience and knowledge in order to find the right assessments in order to get multiple measures. The assessor needs to look closely at the child’s needs in each area and get multiple data points on some areas in order to find the best path for the student. This kind of specialized experience is something that many educators do not have, or haven’t had the opportunity to achieve. However, it’s something that I offer and have experience in administering! I would love the opportunity to support you and your learner in your literacy journey!
